Monitor Audio W165 is a passive, 2-way indoor in-wall loudspeaker designed to install flush into a rectangular wall opening. It combines a 6.5-inch MMP II bass driver with a pivoting 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter and is sold as a single speaker with a white grille.

The current manufacturer specification publishes a 60 Hz–25 kHz frequency response, 88.5 dB sensitivity at 1 W / 1 m, 107.4 dBA maximum SPL and 65 W RMS power handling. The wall requires a 332 × 213 mm rectangular cutout with 92 mm mounting depth.

In-wall, not in-ceiling

W165 is a purpose-built in-wall loudspeaker. Some older supplier records inherited an “In Ceiling” classification, but the exact Monitor Audio product identity and current manufacturer page classify W165 as in-wall. The rectangular cutout, grille geometry and six-position wall fixing system all reflect that installation type.

This distinction matters for search, project planning and product substitution: W165 should not be treated as a round ceiling equivalent to C165 simply because both use a 6.5-inch MMP II driver.

Pivoting tweeter and HF level control

The 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter can be pivoted toward the listening area, helping direct high-frequency output when the speaker position is constrained by studs, electrical services or room geometry. A separate +3 dB / 0 dB / -3 dB HF level switch allows final high-frequency level adjustment after aiming.

Wall-cavity and stud-bay planning

The W165 requires a 332 mm high × 213 mm wide wall opening and 92 mm clear mounting depth. Before cutting, verify stud spacing, electrical / plumbing obstructions, insulation, speaker-wire routing and the available rear cavity.

The overall visible grille measures approximately 370 × 250 mm, while total product depth including the grille is 96 mm. Mounting depth and overall depth are intentionally kept separate because only the 92 mm figure represents the required depth behind the finished wall surface.

Driver and acoustic design

W165 combines a 6.5-inch MMP II cone bass driver with Monitor Audio's pivoting 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. The current manufacturer specification publishes a 60 Hz–25 kHz response and 88.5 dB sensitivity at 1 W / 1 m.

The speaker uses an infinite-baffle alignment. Unlike a freestanding loudspeaker with a self-contained enclosure, the wall cavity becomes part of the installed acoustic environment.

Amplifier matching

W165 is rated at 6 ohms nominal, with 65 W RMS power handling and a manufacturer-recommended amplifier range of 20–65 W. The current manufacturer page does not publish a minimum-impedance value, so one is not inferred.

External amplification is required; W165 does not contain a built-in amplifier, wireless receiver or network streamer.

Pre-construction planning

The current manufacturer / canonical source identifies the WB6 Pre-Construction Bracket for W165. The bracket is a separate installation reference and is not included with the standard speaker.

No current back-box model is published in the approved exact-W165 source stack, so this PDP intentionally does not assign one by analogy from another Monitor Audio in-wall model.

W165 or W180?

Choose W165 where the smaller wall opening and shallower cavity are advantageous. Choose W180 when the wall can accommodate the larger chassis and the system benefits from the 8-inch driver's higher published output / low-frequency capability.

Package and product identification

Identity note: the customer-facing model is W165, while the approved Canadian sellable SKU / MPN is CW165. They identify the same in-wall product.
