Monitor Audio C180 is the larger 8-inch model in Monitor Audio's indoor Basics in-ceiling range. It is a passive, 2-way architectural loudspeaker sold as a single speaker with a white round grille, combining an 8-inch MMP II bass driver with a pivoting 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter.

The current manufacturer specification publishes a 50 Hz–25 kHz frequency response, 90 dB sensitivity at 1 W / 1 m, 111.6 dBA maximum SPL and 120 W RMS power handling. Its larger driver and output capability require a 247 mm ceiling cutout and 122 mm mounting depth.

Why choose the 8-inch C180?

C180 is the larger single-channel in-ceiling option above C165 within the Basics range. The 8-inch MMP II driver is paired with a higher published sensitivity and output rating: 90 dB and 111.6 dBA, versus 88.5 dB and 107.4 dBA for C165. RMS power handling rises from 65 W to 120 W, and the published lower-frequency limit moves from 60 Hz to 50 Hz.

Those gains come with a larger installation footprint. C180 needs a 247 mm opening and 122 mm mounting depth, so the ceiling cavity and project requirements should determine whether the larger chassis is appropriate.

Pivoting tweeter and HF level control

The 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter can be pivoted toward the listening area, helping compensate when the ceiling opening cannot be positioned directly on the ideal acoustic axis. A separate +3 dB / 0 dB / -3 dB HF level switch allows the installer to adjust high-frequency level after aiming.

These are complementary installation controls: tweeter angle changes directionality, while the HF switch changes level.

Driver and acoustic design

The C180 uses an 8-inch MMP II cone bass driver with a pivoting C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. Monitor Audio publishes a 50 Hz–25 kHz frequency response and 90 dB sensitivity at 1 W / 1 m.

Like the C165, C180 uses an infinite-baffle architectural alignment. The ceiling cavity and installation become part of the loudspeaker's acoustic environment, so cutout accuracy, mounting depth and cavity planning matter.

Amplifier matching

C180 is rated at 6 ohms nominal, with 120 W RMS power handling and a manufacturer-recommended amplifier range of 30–120 W. The current manufacturer page does not publish a minimum-impedance figure, so one is not inferred.

External amplification is required. The C180 contains no built-in amplifier, wireless audio receiver or streaming electronics.

Pre-construction, back box and grille references

The current manufacturer specification identifies CL-B as the C180 pre-construction bracket and CML-BOX as the current back-box reference. These current references supersede older CB8-era mappings in dated material.

Current Canadian compatibility data also identifies optional square-grille and alternate round-grille references for the C180 / CC180 family. They are separate accessories and are not included with the standard white round-grille speaker.

C180 or C165?

Choose C165 when the smaller ceiling opening and 6.5-inch platform fit the project. Choose C180 when the larger cavity is available and the system calls for the 8-inch driver's additional published low-frequency / output capability.

Identity note: the customer-facing model is C180, while the approved Canadian sellable SKU / MPN is CC180. They identify the same product and should not be treated as separate models.
