Overview
The POEJK-S48-740 is a 48-port Gigabit PoE+ aggregation switch with a 740W shared PoE budget, designed as a floor or distribution-layer “power plant” for GRID DC microgrid projects. It is ideal for feeding clusters of Active POE-Jack® in-wall switches, wireless access points, cameras and VoIP phones in medium to large buildings.
Sitting between traditional enterprise switches and the flagship 3,600W core, this model gives designers a pragmatic way to adopt zone-based, convergent edge architectures: you centralize PoE at the rack, collapse cabling through POE-Jack® at the wall and keep clean 10GbE uplinks back to the core without overbuilding power capacity.
If you’re looking for a reliable 48-port PoE+ switch for floor-level Active POE-Jack® deployments in Canadian offices, schools, clinics or hotels, the POEJK-S48-740 is the go-to choice.
Key features
- 48× Gigabit PoE+ ports – 48 × 10/100/1000BASE-T (RJ45) ports delivering PoE+ for Active POE-Jack®, APs, cameras and UC endpoints.
- 740W PoE budget – ample power for a typical floor or zone of POE-Jack® nodes and mixed IoT/AV devices when properly budgeted.
- 10GbE uplinks – 2 × SFP+ uplink ports for 10GbE-class connections back to core, aggregation or server infrastructure.
- Standards-based PoE – supports IEEE 802.3af (15.4W) and 802.3at (30W) powered devices.
- Optional redundant PSUs – hot-swappable, load-sharing redundant AC power supplies (C13 inlets) available for higher-availability designs.
- Service-friendly cooling – hot-swappable fan with front-to-back airflow, aligning with modern rack cooling strategies.
- Robust switching fabric – up to 168 Gbps unidirectional / 336 Gbps bidirectional switching capacity for busy floor or distribution layers.
- L2 switching with basic routing – comprehensive Layer 2 feature set plus static routing and RIP for simple Layer 3 segmentation.
- Compact 1U design – 17.4" W × 13.8" D × 1.7" H footprint fits standard 19" racks and wall-mount network enclosures.
- cUL listed – suitable for commercial and institutional low-voltage projects that require third-party safety listing.

Ideal applications
- Floor-level aggregation switch feeding Active POE-Jack® in-wall switches in office, education or healthcare settings.
- Hospitality corridors, guest rooms and conference areas delivering PoE to APs, TVs, STBs and room-control devices.
- Retail and mixed-use projects where cameras, kiosks, POS endpoints and signage are powered over PoE+.
- Mid-size buildings or satellite facilities that do not require a 3,600W core but still benefit from DC microgrid topologies.
- Projects with a mix of data ports and moderate PoE loads (phones, cameras, access control) per floor.
Compatibility & ecosystem
The POEJK-S48-740 is designed to sit under a core switch such as the POEJK-S48-3600 or operate as the main switch in mid-sized sites. It pairs naturally with Active POE-Jack® wall switches, GRID Cat6e/Cat6A permanent links and slim Cat6A patch cords for clean, high-density patching.
It supports typical PoE+ endpoints—IP cameras, APs, VoIP phones, intercoms, access control panels and signage players—while leaving room in the budget for zone-based POE-Jack® clusters at the edge. Together, these pieces form a coherent DC microgrid that is easier to design, document and maintain than legacy star topologies.
Install & design notes
As with any PoE+ switch, the 740W budget is shared across all ports. It cannot deliver 30W to all 48 ports at once, so design teams should calculate realistic diversity and power budgets for each zone. For example, when driving POE-Jack® nodes, some ports may run close to 30W while others supply phones or smaller devices.
In Canadian projects, this model is commonly deployed in floor IDFs in office towers, schools and healthcare facilities. Ensure proper patch cord management and thermal planning in compact wall-mount racks and consider optional redundant PSUs for sites where downtime is costly.
Canada-ready checklist
- ✓ cUL listed for use in Canadian commercial and institutional environments.
- ✓ Works with typical Canadian cabling plants (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6A) at standard Ethernet distances.
- ✓ Well sized as a floor switch for Canadian offices, schools, clinics and hospitality floors using Active POE-Jack®.
- ✓ Supports consolidation of PoE loads that are common in Canadian renovations and tenant improvements.
- ✓ Fits standard 19" racks and network cabinets used in small and mid-size Canadian buildings.
Compatibility micro Q&A
Q: Can I mix PoE and non-PoE devices on this switch?
Yes. Any port can be used for a non-PoE device. PoE is only delivered when a compliant powered device (PD) is detected.
Q: How many Active POE-Jack® units can I support per switch?
That depends on each jack’s downstream load. Many designs allocate one or two POE-Jack® nodes per 48-port switch along with direct-connected APs, phones and cameras. Your integrator should plan a detailed PoE budget.
Q: Does this replace a 3,600W core switch?
For smaller buildings it can. In larger campuses it is often used as a floor or IDF layer under a POEJK-S48-3600 core.
