Monitor Audio W180 is the larger 8-inch model in Monitor Audio's indoor Basics in-wall range. It is a passive, 2-way architectural loudspeaker sold as a single speaker with a white grille, combining an 8-inch MMP II bass driver with a pivoting 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter.
The current manufacturer specification publishes a 50 Hz–25 kHz frequency response, 90 dB sensitivity at 1 W / 1 m, 111.6 dBA maximum SPL and 120 W RMS power handling. Installation requires a 387 × 234 mm rectangular wall cutout with 100 mm mounting depth.

In-wall, not in-ceiling
W180 is a purpose-built in-wall loudspeaker. Some older supplier data inherited an “In Ceiling” classification for the W165 / W180 family, but the exact product identity and current Monitor Audio page classify W180 as in-wall. Its rectangular cutout, wall-cavity installation and six-position fixing system all support that classification.
This distinction is important for search, project planning and substitutions: W180 should not be treated as the wall equivalent of a round C180 simply because both use an 8-inch MMP II bass driver.
Why choose the larger 8-inch W180?
W180 is the larger in-wall alternative to W165. Its 8-inch MMP II driver is paired with a higher published sensitivity and output rating: 90 dB and 111.6 dBA, versus 88.5 dB and 107.4 dBA for W165. RMS power handling rises from 65 W to 120 W, while the published lower-frequency limit moves from 60 Hz to 50 Hz.
The trade-off is installation size. W180 requires a 387 × 234 mm opening and 100 mm mounting depth, so the stud bay and rear wall cavity must be checked before choosing the larger chassis.
Pivoting tweeter and HF level control
The 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter can be pivoted toward the listening area. This helps when the wall position is constrained by studs, electrical services, cabinetry or room geometry rather than being centred perfectly on the preferred listening axis.
A separate +3 dB / 0 dB / -3 dB HF level switch provides final high-frequency adjustment. Tweeter angle and HF level are distinct controls: one changes directionality and the other changes relative output.
Wall-cavity and stud-bay planning
W180 requires a 387 mm high × 234 mm wide rectangular cutout and 100 mm clear mounting depth. Before cutting, verify stud spacing, plumbing / electrical obstructions, insulation, cable routing and the available rear cavity.
The visible grille measures approximately 441 × 288 mm, while total product depth including the grille is 104 mm. Mounting depth and overall depth are kept separate because only the 100 mm measurement represents the required clearance behind the finished wall surface.
Driver and acoustic design
W180 uses an 8-inch MMP II cone bass driver with a pivoting 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. Monitor Audio publishes a 50 Hz–25 kHz frequency response and 90 dB sensitivity at 1 W / 1 m.
The speaker uses an infinite-baffle architectural alignment. Unlike a freestanding loudspeaker with a self-contained cabinet, the installed wall cavity becomes part of the acoustic environment.
Amplifier matching
W180 is rated at 6 ohms nominal, with 120 W RMS power handling and a manufacturer-recommended amplifier range of 30–120 W. The current manufacturer page does not publish a minimum-impedance value, so one is not inferred.
External amplification is required; W180 does not contain a built-in amplifier, wireless audio receiver or network streamer.

Pre-construction bracket and back box
The current Monitor Audio product page identifies the WB8 Pre-Construction Bracket (Green) for W180 and explicitly lists WCBOX-L as the model-specific back box. Both are installation accessories and are separate from the standard W180 speaker.
Use the pre-construction bracket when the project requires speaker-position planning before the finished wall surface is installed. The back box should be selected only where its installation requirements and project design call for it; its published compatibility is model-specific to W180 in the current source stack.
W180 or W165?
| Decision point | W165 | W180 |
|---|---|---|
| Bass driver | 6.5 in MMP II | 8 in MMP II |
| Frequency response | 60 Hz–25 kHz | 50 Hz–25 kHz |
| Sensitivity | 88.5 dB | 90 dB |
| Maximum SPL | 107.4 dBA | 111.6 dBA |
| RMS power handling | 65 W | 120 W |
| Recommended amplifier | 20–65 W | 30–120 W |
| Cutout | 332 × 213 mm | 387 × 234 mm |
| Mounting depth | 92 mm | 100 mm |
| Current back box | No current model staged in approved W165 source stack | WCBOX-L |
Choose W165 where the smaller wall opening and shallower cavity are more important. Choose W180 when the project can accommodate its larger chassis and benefits from the 8-inch driver's higher published low-frequency / output capability.
