Panasonic ERV Selection Guide for Canadian Contractors: Which Model, Which Application
Panasonic makes the most widely-specified residential ERV in the Canadian market, and for good reason. The BalancedHome line is quiet, reliable, and backed by genuine warranty support through Canadian distributors. But the model selection conversation trips up a lot of contractors — particularly the HRV vs ERV question and CFM sizing for tightly-built Canadian homes. This guide is designed to make that conversation shorter.
HRV vs ERV in Canada: The Short Answer
Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) and Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) both recover heat from exhaust air to pre-condition incoming fresh air. The difference is moisture: an ERV also transfers moisture between airstreams, while an HRV doesn't.
In Canadian winters, indoor air becomes very dry. An ERV retains some of the moisture from exhaust air and transfers it to the incoming fresh air — this moderates indoor humidity and reduces how hard the humidifier (if any) has to work. An HRV discards that moisture with the exhaust stream.
The practical recommendation for most Canadian residential projects is an ERV — it handles the full range of Canadian seasons better. In a dry Alberta winter, an ERV maintains comfortable humidity levels passively. In a humid Ontario summer, the ERV's moisture-transfer capability actually works in reverse: it extracts moisture from incoming humid outdoor air before it enters the conditioned space.
The main exception: very high-humidity homes (indoor pools, spas, or high-occupancy buildings where interior humidity is chronically elevated) may benefit from an HRV, which removes moisture from indoor air rather than retaining it. For standard residential construction, default to ERV.
CFM Sizing: The Calculation That Actually Matters
Undersized ERVs run continuously and still fail to meet ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation requirements. Oversized ERVs cost more than necessary and can depressurize tightly-built homes. Get the sizing right.
ASHRAE 62.2 (which the National Building Code of Canada references for ventilation requirements in most provinces) calculates required ventilation airflow as:
Q = 0.15 × floor area (sq ft) + 7.5 × (number of bedrooms + 1)
For a 2,500 sq ft home with 3 bedrooms: Q = 0.15(2500) + 7.5(4) = 375 + 30 = 405 CFM... no, that's the total ventilation load including the kitchen and bath fans. For a whole-house ERV:
- A 1,500 sq ft 3-bedroom home typically needs 40-60 CFM of continuous ERV ventilation
- A 2,500 sq ft 4-bedroom home typically needs 60-90 CFM
- A 3,500+ sq ft 5-bedroom home may need 90-150 CFM depending on airtightness
If the home has a blower door test result (ACH50), use it. Tighter homes need more mechanical ventilation because they rely less on incidental infiltration. A home at 1.5 ACH50 or tighter — common in new Alberta and BC Energy Step Code construction — needs to hit ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation rates entirely through mechanical means.
The Panasonic BalancedHome ERV Lineup
Panasonic's residential ERV lineup for Canada runs from approximately 40 CFM to 290 CFM. The models most commonly specified in Canadian residential projects:
FV-10VEC2 — 100 CFM (Most Common Residential)
The workhorse of the Panasonic ERV lineup. At 100 CFM and rated for homes up to approximately 2,200 sq ft, the FV-10VEC2 covers the majority of Canadian single-family construction. It runs on a single-speed motor, is rated for cold climate operation to -13°C (core protection), and includes a summer bypass damper for warmer months. This is the default specification for most Alberta and BC new construction projects in the 1,500-2,500 sq ft range.
FV-13VEC1S / FV-16VEC1S — 130 and 160 CFM
The next tier up for larger homes or projects requiring more airflow. The FV-16VEC1S at 160 CFM handles homes up to approximately 3,200 sq ft. These models are also appropriate for projects with above-average occupancy (home daycares, large families) where ASHRAE 62.2 calculations push the required CFM above what the FV-10VEC2 can deliver continuously.
FV-20VEC1 — 200 CFM
For larger custom homes and light commercial applications. At 200 CFM, the FV-20VEC1 is often specified for homes above 3,500 sq ft or for projects where a single unit needs to serve multiple zones. Requires larger duct connections than the smaller models — confirm duct sizing early in the mechanical rough-in.
FV-12ESC1 — Commercial Grade
Panasonic's commercial ERV entry point. Different cabinet construction, higher static pressure capability, and designed for commercial duct systems. Typically specified for small office buildings, suites in MDU buildings, and commercial retrofit projects where a residential-grade unit would be inappropriate for the application. Confirm local AHJ requirements for commercial ventilation units before speccing.
Cold Climate Performance: What -30°C Does to Your ERV Spec
Canadian winters test ERVs in ways that most product testing doesn't replicate. Two issues that come up on cold-climate projects:
Core frosting: At very low outdoor temperatures, moisture in the exhaust airstream freezes on the heat exchange core, reducing efficiency and potentially blocking airflow. Panasonic's BalancedHome ERVs include auto-defrost controls that temporarily pause fresh air intake to allow the core to warm and clear. This is standard on all models — not an optional add-on. However, the defrost cycle reduces effective ventilation airflow during the coldest periods. For very airtight homes in very cold climates (Saskatchewan, northern Alberta), factor in some defrost cycle time when calculating whether the unit meets continuous ventilation requirements.
Pre-heat requirements: At sustained temperatures below -25°C, some installations benefit from pre-conditioning the outdoor air intake duct — either running the duct through a warmer space (garage, mechanical room) before reaching the ERV, or using a short section of duct wrap with heat tape. This is an installation detail that doesn't appear in product specs but matters for reliability in northern climates.
Installation Notes for Canadian Conditions
Duct sizing: Panasonic ERVs are sensitive to static pressure. Undersized ducts, long duct runs, or too many elbows reduce actual airflow below rated CFM. Follow Panasonic's duct sizing tables and keep runs as short and straight as practical. A unit rated for 100 CFM may only deliver 70 CFM in a poorly-designed duct system.
Intake and exhaust locations: The outdoor intake hood should be on the north or east face of the building where possible, avoiding south or west exposure that causes solar-heated air to enter in summer. Keep the exhaust hood at least 6 feet from the intake to prevent short-circuiting. Both hoods need to be well clear of snow accumulation points — a buried intake is a service call waiting to happen in the first heavy snowfall.
Controls integration: Panasonic ERVs can be wired to a standard 24V thermostat input for boost control — useful in projects where the ERV needs to ramp up when the kitchen range hood runs, or when occupancy rises above normal. Some custom installers wire the boost input to a motion sensor in the kitchen for automatic high-speed operation during cooking. Simple, effective, and clients notice the air quality improvement.
Comparing Panasonic to the Alternatives
Lifebreath, Venmar, and Fantech are the most common competitors to Panasonic in the Canadian market. Panasonic's advantages in contractor conversations:
- Noise: DC motor technology in the BalancedHome line makes Panasonic consistently the quietest option — relevant for installs adjacent to bedrooms or open-concept living areas
- Warranty and support: Panasonic Canada handles Canadian warranty directly; some import-channel competitors require shipping units to US service centers
