But there's a meaningful gap between "I sell RA3" and "I understand how to design RA3 systems well." This guide covers what you need to know to spec, size, and propose RA3 systems confidently.

Why RadioRA 3 Beats Caséta for Serious Projects

Lutron's Caséta is a great consumer-grade system. RadioRA 3 is something different. The key differences that matter for professional installs:

• System capacity: RA3 handles up to 200 devices per main repeater, expandable with additional processors. Caséta caps at 75 devices on a single Smart Bridge PRO.
• Clear Connect Type X: RA3's RF protocol operates on a dedicated 434 MHz band — not 2.4 GHz. In dense WiFi environments (MDUs, commercial spaces), this is a significant reliability advantage.
• Keypads with engraving: RA3's Sunnata keypads support custom laser-engraved buttons — a major selling point for high-end residential and hospitality.
• Shade integration: RA3 natively integrates with Lutron's motorized shade lines, making it the default choice whenever shades are in scope.
• Commercial-grade features: 0-10V dimming outputs, PoE-enabled processors, and daylight sensors that make ASHRAE 90.1 compliance achievable.

System Components You Need to Know

Main Repeater (RR-MAIN-REP)

The heart of every RA3 installation. The main repeater manages the mesh RF network and integrates with third-party control systems via Lutron's telnet API. One main repeater handles up to 200 devices and 100 areas. For larger projects, additional repeaters expand capacity — up to 400 zones in a single project with multiple repeaters working together.

The repeater needs to be mounted within the conditioned envelope of the structure and requires an Ethernet connection for integration and programming. Plan this into your rough-in scope — it's not a device you tuck in a random closet after the fact.

Sunnata Dimmers and Switches

RA3's primary control surface is the Sunnata series — available as a standalone dimmer, toggle switch, companion dimmer (for 3-way configurations), and a full-featured Smart Keypad with LED indicators. The Sunnata series comes in white, light almond, and matte black finishes, with Lutron's screwless wallplates producing a clean final look.

Important for Canadian installs: RA3 dimmers are available in both neutral-required and no-neutral configurations. Verify which applies to your specific model before quoting. Most modern Canadian construction includes neutral at the switch, but pre-2015 homes — common in Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto urban cores — frequently don't.

Pico Wireless Remotes

Pico wireless remotes are the most flexible element in any RA3 design. They require no neutral wire, mount anywhere with a wallplate or pedestal, and cost a fraction of a hardwired device. Use them for bedside table lighting control with nightstand pedestals, island or dining table scene control, adding a second switch location without running new wire, and entry control for mudrooms or garages.

Pico remotes are not counted against your 200-device repeater limit in the same way as hardwired devices — this matters when approaching capacity on a large project.

Occupancy and Vacancy Sensors

RA3's wireless occupancy sensors (Radio Powr Savr series) use passive infrared with fine-motion detection technology. They communicate on the same Clear Connect Type X mesh as everything else. For commercial projects pursuing LEED or ASHRAE 90.1 compliance, these sensors enable automatic shutoff in unoccupied spaces, which is typically required by code.

Sunnata Keypads for Scene Control

For homeowners who want preset lighting scenes, the Sunnata keypads (2, 3, or 4-button versions) allow single-button recall of programmed scenes across multiple zones. Pressing "Dinner" and watching the dining room, kitchen peninsula, and adjacent living space set perfectly is a compelling demonstration. Custom laser-engraved button labels make the system feel purpose-built rather than generic.

System Sizing: The Numbers That Matter

• 200 devices per main repeater, 100 areas: A device is any hardwired dimmer, switch, or sensor. Know your device count before speccing the repeater configuration.
• One dimmer per circuit: RA3 dimmers control one load circuit each. Multi-gang installations need one device per gang position. Undercount errors in multi-switch locations are the most common takeoff mistake.
• LED load ratings: RA3 dimmers carry specific LED load ratings lower than their total wattage. A 150W dimmer may be rated for 75-100W of LED load depending on the model. Exceeding LED load ratings causes humming and flicker, especially with Canadian LED brands not on Lutron's compatibility list.

Integration Ecosystem

• Sonos: When a scene activates, Sonos can pause or play simultaneously — RA3's Sonos integration handles this without a third-party hub.
• Control4, Savant, RTI: Via the L-BDGPRO2 Smart Hub PRO, RA3 exposes full bidirectional control to third-party systems. The standard L-BDG2 does not expose the telnet API that Control4 needs — you must specify the PRO version. Confusing these is one of the most expensive mistakes in RA3 integration.
• Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa: Native voice control comes standard through the Lutron app — no additional hardware required.
• Lutron Motorized Shades: Sivoia QS Wireless shades use the same Clear Connect RF network and the same programming environment — a single Lutron system for both lighting and shading.

Canadian-Specific Considerations

Neutral wire availability: Modern Canadian Electrical Code required neutral wire at switch boxes in new construction starting around 2015, but adoption varies by province and inspector. In pre-2015 homes and older multi-family buildings, assume no neutral until confirmed. Spec no-neutral dimmers or document the limitation in your proposal.

cULus listing: All RA3 devices stocked by Simply Controlled carry cULus listing for Canadian use. This matters for AHJ signoff on commercial projects — specifying US-only UL listed versions creates inspection complications.

LED compatibility with Canadian brands: Lotus LED, Reno Lighting, and other Canadian-market LED brands may not appear on Lutron's official compatibility list. The RA3 C.L. dimmers generally perform better with unlisted LED loads than older Maestro models.

The Mistakes That Cost You a Site Visit

1. L-BDG2 instead of L-BDGPRO2 for third-party integration: The standard Smart Bridge doesn't expose the API Control4 and similar systems need. You'll discover this on commissioning day.
2. Programming before all devices are installed: Doing a partial commission then adding devices creates rework. Get the device count final before you start programming.
3. Not verifying firmware on stocked devices: Devices that sit in inventory several months before install can have firmware mismatches. Check and update before commission day, not during it.
4. Forgetting neutral count at multi-gang boxes: If neutral availability is tight at specific locations, flag this at rough-in inspection — not at trim-out.
