Choosing the Right PoE Switch for Canadian AV and Smart Home Installations

On residential and light commercial projects, the integrator usually specifies the switch. IT isn't involved. That means the responsibility for powering IP cameras, VoIP phones, Lutron Vive hubs, door controllers, and AV-over-IP endpoints falls on you — along with the liability when an undersized PSE trips its power budget at 3am.

802.3 Standards: What the Suffixes Actually Mean

802.3af (PoE) — 15.4W per port, 12.95W at the device. Sufficient for IP cameras, VoIP phones, and basic access control readers.

802.3at (PoE+) — 30W per port, 25.5W at the device. Required for PTZ cameras, wireless access points, and dual-radio APs.

802.3bt Type 3 (PoE++) — 60W per port. Needed for high-power Wi-Fi 6E APs, some IP intercoms, and PTZ cameras with heaters.

802.3bt Type 4 (PoE++) — 100W per port. Required for thin clients, small displays, and emerging AV-over-IP endpoints.

Power Budget: The Number That Matters Most

A 24-port PoE+ switch rated at 30W per port does not deliver 720W total. Most prosumer switches cap total PoE budget at 180–380W. If you fill 12 ports with 25W devices, the remaining ports may get reduced allocation. Always check the datasheet's total PoE power budget. For projects with 16+ powered ports, use managed switches with per-port power monitoring.

Recommended Switch Categories for Canadian Integrators

For residential projects under 20 powered ports: Luxul, Araknis, or Pakedge managed switches pair well with Control4 and Crestron. All are available through Canadian trade distributors and include lifetime tech support in Canada.

For commercial projects with VLAN requirements: Cisco SG350 series or Netgear M4250 (AV Line) offer Layer 3 routing, IGMP snooping for AV-over-IP multicast, and 802.3bt on select models.

For budget residential: Ubiquiti UniFi switches require a UniFi controller for proper VLAN and QoS configuration — factor that into your install time.

IGMP Snooping: Non-Negotiable for AV-over-IP

AV-over-IP protocols (NDI, SDVoE, Dante, AVB) use multicast. Without IGMP snooping enabled on every switch in the path, multicast floods the entire network and saturates unintended ports. Verify this is enabled before commissioning — it's off by default on most consumer switches.

Canadian Electrical Code Considerations

Under the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) Section 16, Class 2 power supplies — including PoE switches — must be CSA or ULC listed for the jurisdiction. Verify the switch you specify carries CSA certification, not just FCC/CE. Most Cisco, Netgear, and Luxul commercial switches are CSA listed; some imports are not.
